Why do you do what you do? Why Entrepreneurship? Why anything?

2010 March 27
by Maddi Murtaza

Hello Folks,

Before I procrastinate and delay my second post I’m just going to fireaway.

The topic is one that I have been thinking about a lot lately and one that I think is the Foundation

of the very business I am in. It has also been the topic of discussion with many aspiring entrepreneurs specially in the online world and one that I am very passionate about.

I recently had an hour long skype chat with aspiring entrepreneur I met online and who was very enthusiastic and passionate about making money online and being able to work from any where in the world, but there was a problem. He wasn’t succeeding. He wasn’t even progressing and had already bought various courses, guides and blueprints to work on and had spent a substantial sum in the costs.

After about 15 minutes in the chat and I asked him casually Why did he wanna do what he was doing?

-Not a very clear answer

Which led to my other question and that was Why was he doing what he had been doing i.e. Job

- Because we gotta work to make a living and earn enough money to provide for the family.

Its gonna be a long post if I detail my entire conversation here but the core was that he didn’t have a proper answer for my first question.

Now I believe you should always have a reasoning behind whatever you do in life. The reason doesn’t have to make sense [cos life seldom makes sense anyway] but you gotta have a reason nonetheless. But I also realize that most of us are so conditioned to follow the herd so to speak, we hardly ever think about Why we do what we do and Why does it have to be this way. The most common answer is We do what we do because that is how it is done or We do what we do because everyone does so.

To be honest, this mode of living doesn’t appeal me i.e. Following the herd and it never really has.

And the very foundation of it all begins with a ‘reason’.

If you have a strong enough reason for anything in life, you will make it work. You will succeed and you will achieve whatever your goal is.

Zig Ziglar once said

“The people who know ‘How’ and  ‘What’ end up working

for people who know WHY”

This quote really brings the point home. I have a reason and I know the WHY. Do you?

It becomes immensely easy to keep pushing when times are hard if you have a very clear reason and I personally suggest writing it down. It gives you the power and strength to push through failures and hardships because you know WHY you need it and WHY you want it.

And it all comes down to whether you want it bad enough or not. Writing your WHY down will make you want it bad enough and will make you never wanna quit.

I will share my WHY in some other post but I encourage you to share yours in the comments below. And I also wanna thank everyone who commented on my first post I highly appreciate it. Your comments gave me the strength and motivation for my second post and I look forward to hearing from you often.

    Hi Maddi!! =)
I have heard that over and over again.
You have to have your “WHY”
Why are you doing what you are doing, because if there is no why…then all of the obstacles that come along will be too much and people give up!
I also hear a vision board is good. I have one, but honestly, I need to update it! It has a 2008 minivan (you know I need the mom van) on it, and I am wanting one a little newer than that!
You have inspired me today! I am gonna get skinny and update the board!

    Here is some WHY…
I want to be able to stay home with my kids, they are growing up and I am missing out on their life.
I want to go places like Cabo and the UK (to meet all my new friends) for a vacation as long as I want to be there. A day? A month? a year? (you got room for 8?)
I want a built in swimming pool that I can lounge around in all day! (and drink those little umbrella drinks!)
I want to have the time to help out anyone who needs it with blogging, inspiration, and setting up an online business.
I want to be able to give my church and any charities that help the needy people all they need to help as many people as they can!
WOAH! Maddie, the list can go on and on…..

    What is YOUR WHY? =)

    TTYL,

    Lisa~

      Hey Lisa,

Thanks so much for comin.. and what a great list.

Update that vision board asap, I don’t have one at the moment but I’ve heard
it should be updated regularly to keep your momentum. As for coming to the UK
I so look forward to see you or who knows I may pop around yours before that ;)

My WHY is a massive list… but will be posting the update here very soon.

btw I’ve emailed you something I think you’ll like :-)

      Hows the masterclass coming?

      Talk soon,

Why is one of the first words that came out of the mouths of my children as they were growing up. “But why?” they would ask when something or other didn’t compute. It begins from an early age – wanting to know the purpose of some action – and we seem to lose it over time. Maybe it is a survival technique. If you ask why too much as an adult you might look dumb. Not knowing might be considered a sign of weakness.

Doing something for sake of getting it done is not good enough. I go to work each day to make a difference in the lives of young people (in am involved in education). I also work on a number of web-based businesses in order to build multiple streams of income. Do I peddle useless e-books with resale rights? No! There is no purpose in that other than to make a few dollars at the expense of inexperienced web newbies. I work to build up others around me and give them the tools they need to succeed. That is part of the why. Whether it is classroom education building up young adults or web-based activities putting tools, solutions and success into the hands of visitors to my websites, the why is about helping other to succeed while enjoying the journey myself.

Yes, growing up as a child I was sort of famous for asking too many questions :) specially the ‘Why’ ones.

Finding out the reasoning for any given action may turn out be a key to a lot of solutions if we do it often.
And I totally agree that we lose it over time. We become conscious of our questions and regard them as
insignificant because one tends to think that ‘I will look amateur asking such a question’ and that mentality
is slowly killing our intellect subconsciously.

I wish you all the best in everything you do. You are the kind of person who has a strong reasoning for
what you do and why you do it and I bet that helps a lot.

I was checking your website and I must say I am very impressed. Will drop by often mate.

Saw the videos! Maddi, you look like you are in perfect health! All buff and everything!
    Keep the hair! =)
I am on day 2 of the diet and today is an eating lots day, so well see how that goes, then tomorrow….start the protocol!
Masterclass is good, I am researching a niche this week and it is pretty confusing for me! I don’t know what niche to choose! I was reading a blog post somewhere that said any niche in health or wealth would be good, but I really want to refine it down to a very targeted niche.
    Got some research to do!
Hope all is good over there! Buff-bod!

    Take care and TTYL

    Lisa~
P.S. got a new pic up on Twitter and Facebook, wanted a skinnier-face pic! Check it out!

    Hi Maddi!

Great 2nd post. Keep being the authentic and genuine you – you have so much wisdom to share about your process.

The reason WHY is crucial. Take a look at all the greatest successes of our time, or even the moderate ones – what do they have in common?

    1. They serve a greater purpose than simply ‘to make money’.

    2. They do it with a PASSION that is bordering on obsession.

What you’ve shared is the major distinction between an employee mindset (just tell me WHAT to do) and the entrepreneur mindset (HOW does this fit into my WHY). Simply put, there’s NO WAY anyone can build a successful and profitable business online without a compelling WHY because that’s what a business is. It’s the embodiment of WHY.

    WHY do you exist?

    WHY do people need you?

    WHY should people pay you?

WHY – The million dollar question.

Look forward to your future posts Maddi!

    Believing In You!

You definitely got it right and I’m glad my post conveyed it the way I wanted it to.

‘Why’ really is a powerful word, an underlying difference between the Leading and the
following. Once one figures out a Why compliments it with a Desire works with all his
heart to take Action and is Consistent in doing so, There is nothing stopping him from
      achieving whatever he wants to.

      Thanks Thad.

    Hi Maddi

I think you’ve got to have a good WHY to be a success online. My WHY is so that I can work from home and be there for the kids when they finish school or are off school sick.

If I’m having a bad week and nothings going to plan I just think about my WHY and it pulls me through.

Good luck with your new venture I hope it goes well and keep the good content coming.

Definitely a motivator isn’t it. I think if you have a strong WHY and even better, you have your WHY written somewhere you can see, it will help more than any self help book when times are hard and you need a little push ;-)

By the way the Blog is just in its infancy, I am sorting out the little bits and bobs here and there, soon we’ll have a smart looking Blog here so keep popping here every now and then. It’ll be good to see you around.

    Thanks for the wishes.

  9. April 16, 2010

Thanks for tweaking my curiosity Maddi. I’m glad I visited your Blog because for one thing it has brought home to me the total lack of recent entries in my own!
I seemed to hit the “I Can’t Blog” barrier, which is crazy when you see all my posts in the More Monthly Forum!
I’ve been hovering around On Line for many years now but for a long time I felt that I knew little about it as I always had so many “What” – “How” – “Say That Again” type of queries.
I realise now that I do know a lot more than I’d given myself credit for….. and yet I hit a wall and wasn’t keeping this “WHY” question uppermost in my mind whilst spending so much time On Line.
So thanks – you have helped me.
“Focus” has always proved difficult because I find the Internet such an interesting world, and I am easily distracted when absorbed in it. Now I know I NEED a large “Why” reminder stuck up before me because I do actually NEED to be making a living from this… !! Not just having fun.
Keep it up – I like the tidy theme, and your style (except the “gonnas” and “gottas” – I’m too old English to appreciate them!)
    Yours
    John O’York

    • April 20, 2010

Welcome John and thanks for coming.

Yes it really is crazy when I think about my posts on the forums and not having a blog post regularly here. I am glad I could be of help. We really easily deviate from our goals and tasks when we don’t have a conscious WHY and although we seem to be working [ surfing the web] on the surface, but that isn’t really moving us anywhere and we are standing in still waters without any progress.
Since you have already decided that you NEED to be making a living from this, it can be a strong part of your WHY and really, in the end it all boils down to how bad do you want it? How much will you give to make it work? and by give I don’t mean Money.
Once you have that decided, it will fuel your passion to make a living online and your WHY written clearly in front of you will constantly remind you of this.

Thanks for the comments on the Blog and although the look will change over time as I have plans for this place, but I will keep it tidy :-)

Hope you will be visiting often.
      Warmly,
      Maddi Murtaza

p.s. I am ‘gonna’ post procrastination part 2 so you ‘gotta’ check it out haha
